Interview of Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on Parapolitika 90.1, with journalists Christina Korai and Dimitris Takis – main points (12 April 2021)

Turkey’s conduct will determine whether the upcoming Greek-Turkish talks take place, Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis stressed in his interview on Parapolitika 90.1 with journalists Christina Korai and Dimitris Takis.

Mr. Varvitsiotis noted that the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ visit to Turkey will take place provided there are no serious provocations that would cause the trip to be cancelled, adding that the Greek side does not want to cancel the visit, but that this hinges on the conduct of our neighbours, who must show the requisite sobriety. In this regard, he mentioned the recent provocative postings by the Turkish side, which do not cultivate a good climate.

Asked about the recent visit of the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council to Ankara, the Alternate Minister underscored that “sofa-gate, in terms of image, was traumatic for the European leadership,” which brought a reaction from the European People’s Party and the head of the EPP parliamentary group, Manfred Weber, but he underscored that the messages sent by the European leadership to Turkey were absolutely in line with those requested by the European Council.
