Interview of Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on Parapolitika 90.1 with journalist P. Tzenos – main points (11.05.2021)

“In the Declaration of the Porto Summit, the EU adopted many of Greece’s proposals for a Social Europe. It is important to revitalise social state, improved and enhanced, as an integral part of the European vision”, said Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis in an interview on Parapolitika 90.1 with journalist Panagiotis Tzenos, referring to the results of the recent Social Summit in Portugal.

Commenting on the meeting of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis with his Spanish counterpart Mr. Pedro Sanchez, in which he also participated, Mr. Varvitsiotis stressed: “It is important that along with Spain we are involved in all initiatives concerning Europe. Of course, both countries are integral parts of the group of Mediterranean countries Med7 whose Summit will take place this year in Crete, chaired by Kyriakos Mitsotakis. There is still one more issue that unites us, the problem of immigration and the way Europe will face up to the challenge according to the new European Pact on Immigration and Asylum”.

On the issue of vaccination, Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed: “The fact the Commission has assumed the European coordination is, I think, a major success of the European Union in a field where there was neither experience nor obligation, and this is an important achievement”.

Asked about today’s announcement by SYRIZA, Mr. Varvitsiotis said: “In SYRIZA they have really lost their temper, they have reached the bottom of ridiculousness because they continue to comment, they continue to circulate fake news despite the denials. Quite simply, on Sunday we held a ceremony at the Acropolis where the European flag was raised along with the Greek flag, as May 9 was Europe Day.

The President of the Hellenic Republic attended along with government officials and the Greek Commissioner Mr. Schinas to raise the European flag next to the Greek one. On the sidelines of this event I took some souvenir photos of the places where any visitor is allowed to walk. I did not trespass on any of the areas where it is forbidden to stand, walk or take photos. Any place outside the fenced area is open to the general public. Now, if they really want to raise issues where they do not exist, let them continue to do so.

Unfortunately, this kind of opposition will keep them at low approval rates and of course they will keep on searching to find what is wrong with them. Their problem is that they cannot articulate political discourse. In the face of major political problems they cannot offer groundbraking proposals, in the face of major challenges they cannot utter anything new and the only thing they use is fake news. I believe they deserve the ridicule of the internet”.
