Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andreas Katsaniotis’ message to Diaspora Greeks on the occasion of the National Holiday of 28 October 1940 (27.10.2022)

Greeks all over the world,
The 28th of October is a day of honour and remembrance for Hellenism. It is the day when unity triumphed over discord and hope triumphed over fear. It is the day when a brave battle was fought for the high ideals that Greeks have bequeathed to humanity.
Every threat, violation, and blackmail receive only one, unanimous and thunderous response: “NO”!
By defending the timeless values of freedom, democracy and justice, our ancestors became symbols of heroism and self-sacrifice. The Epic of the 1940 highlights in the most emphatic way the unity and unanimity of our people, who were not intimidated by the enemy’s superiority. A small country, but with a great soul and unchained spirit, served as an example for the entire world.
Today, with faith in our creative powers, an open mind, unity, and great national self-confidence, we are moving ahead together towards a better and fairer world.
Hellenism has always served as a point of reference for humanity, either as an ark of universal values or as a guardian of our centuries-old civilization. Time and history have often tested our Nation, forging its resilience and revealing the universal dimension of Hellenism. In today’s world, there is no room for complacency. Today, more than ever, we have to highlight the timeless message of the 28th of October.Every year on this day, our minds recall our nation’s resounding and proud “NO” to the would-be conqueror. Our people’s bravery and determination to give the all-out fight for our Motherland forced a numerically superior opponent to its first defeat.Greeks,However, this year’s anniversary celebration, is taking place in a world that appears to have lost its direction. Universal values such as freedom, national sovereignty, territorial integrity, International Law, human rights – are viewed as contested narratives of the past.  Even before it has healed the pandemic’s multiple wounds, humanity is confronted with revisionism, tension strategies, authoritarianism, and hateful rhetoric.Compatriots,Our country is highly regarded internationally thanks to the ability, spirit, determination, and pride of all Greeks within and outside our national borders. Our national memory inspires the present and the future generations with the high ideals that have shaped our nation’s identity over time.Long live 28 October! Long live Greece!Dear compatriots,
