Announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the organization by Greece in consultation with the United States of America of the International Conference “Our Ocean Conference” in 2024 (08.06.2022)

On the occasion of World Oceans Day today, June 8, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces that Greece in consultation with the United States of America will organize in 2024 the 9th International Conference “Our Ocean Conference”, which will take place in our country.
This conference was first organized in 2014 and was an initiative of the then US Secretary of State and current US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry.The organization of this Conference was at the focus of the meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias and Mr. Kerry in Washington D.C. on May 17.
The conference is expected to examine ways to address the impacts of climate change, overfishing and marine pollution. Both interested states and non-governmental organizations will be represented at the Conference with the goal of making commitments on the protection the seas.The protection and preservation of the marine environment is a separate chapter of the UN Convention on the International Law of the Sea (Chapter 12), the respect of which constitutes a fundamental principle of our country.
