Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis’ statement upon arrival at the informal EU General Affairs Council (Prague, 15.07. 2022)

As the Alternate Minister said, discussions will focus on how Europe will face the risk of a worsening energy crisis and consequently the economic situation due to rising inflation. He stated that “the situation is no longer favourable to continue discussions, but it is imperative to take decisions”, emphasizing that the Greek government intends to support any initiative that will result in lower energy prices for consumers.
Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis’ statement upon arrival at the informal EU General Affairs Council (Prague, 15.07. 2022)“We are one of the countries that are pushing for proposals to be tabled in order to reduce energy costs for European citizens”, Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis stressed upon arrival today at the informal EU General Affairs Council in Prague, recalling that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has been proposing for months to put a cap on gas prices and decouple electricity prices from it.
In addition, Mr. Varvitsiotis said that he would inform his colleagues in the General Affairs Council about Turkey’s provocative conduct in the region, emphasizing the importance of making a decision on the exploitation of the gas reserves in the South-Eastern Mediterranean.
In particular, Mr. Varvitsiotis said that today’s General Affairs Council will be informed about the priorities of the Czech Presidency, while they will discuss with Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Olga Stefanishyna, the country’s European perspective.
