Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis has an extraordinary videoconference with the Russian Co-Chair of the Greek-Russian Joint Interministerial Committee (Tuesday, 11.05.2021)

The Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis and the Russian Co-Chair of the Greek-Russian Joint Interministerial Committee, Minister of Transport Vitaly Saveliev expressed today on a videoconference their common will to speed up the procedures for mutual recognition of vaccination certificates and finalize the date of resuming flights between Greece and Russia.

The main topic of the videoconference was the resumption of the Greek-Russian airline connectivity, which is urgent, in view of the reopening of Greek tourism on May 15. As Mr. Varvitsiotis noted Russian citizens have shown increased interest in travelling to Greek destinations during summer according to airlines. For this reason, the two ministers agreed to contact again next week, in order to finalize the date of the flights resumption, based on the latest epidemiological data.

The Alternate Minister also noted that Greece, in terms of the pandemic, belongs to the category of “green” countries of the European Union, while the vaccination program is accelerating, with 1% of the Greek population being vaccinated daily. “It is certain that the epidemiological picture in Greece is significantly improving day by day, as the latest trends suggest”, he pointed out.

Mr. Varvitsiotis underscored the long-standing ties of friendship between Russia and Greece. He also expressed his sorrow over today’s armed attack on a school in Kazan, resulting in the death of young students.

In the videoconference, on behalf of Greece, also participated the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Ioannis Kefalogiannis, the Secretary General for International Economic Affairs Ioannis Smyrlis, the Secretary General for Tourism Policy and Development Vicky Loizou, the Commander of Civil Aviation Service, Gergios Dritsakos and the member of the Committee of Experts of the Ministry of Health, Gikas Majorkinis.
