This presentation provides an overview of the latest demographic trends in EU regions. It builds on the recent Eurostat regional population projection to show what are plausible demographic outcomes and what are not.
It highlights that the current age structure of the population, with an ageing baby boom, would require unprecedented increases in fertility and migration to avoid a reduction in the total EU population. This reduction in population is no reason for alarm. With the right policies in place, these demographic changes will not undermine our income or our wellbeing.
While the pace of change at the EU level is relatively slow, the regional changes are more pronounced with some regions shrinking rapidly while others continue to grow. Therefore, the second part of the presentation focuses on what policies are needed at the regional level to address these trends. It will cover the impact of demographic changes on the regional demand for services, such as education and healthcare, the labour market and the housing market.
