18th EU remembrance day for victims of terrorism

This annual event was established in the aftermath of the Madrid bombings, which took place on 11 March 2004.

As 2022 is also the European year of youth, this year’s theme is ‘Voices of Europe – Generations united in remembrance’, thereby placing emphasis on the transgenerational dimension of this endeavour echoing the importance of bridging across generations and involving the younger citizens.

The EU ceremony will provide a unique opportunity for victims to share their experience and have their story heard, and in turn, to demonstrate to all victims our collective efforts to protect and support them. The event will also include institutional speeches, a testimonial from a first responder, a presentation from civil society and from a Member State.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic situation, this year’s ceremony will take place in a hybrid format on the morning of 11 March 2022 in Brussels in the Commission premises.
