The President of Ireland received the Cuban ambassador in a farewell audience.

Dublin, February 11, 2022, Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland received in a farewell audience Hugo Ramos MilanĂ©s, ambassador of Cuba, and Soraya Torres Jaime, official in charge of consular affairs, who conclude their diplomatic mission after something more 4 years of service. After sending cordial greetings to President Miguel DĂ­az-Canel Bermudes and comrade RaĂºl Castro Ruz, the Irish president ratified his gratitude for the support provided by the Cuban government so that Ireland could occupy a seat as a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the UN. He also recalled with satisfaction his official visit to Cuba and the one made by the Cuban President to Ireland, pointing out that the agreements adopted during them will contribute to the development of bilateral relations. For his part, the Cuban Ambassador to Ireland also reiterated the gratitude of the Government and the people of Cuba for the support provided by Ireland over the years to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed for more than six decades by government of the United States against the people of Cuba. Also for the Irish contribution to the implementation of the European Union-Cuba Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement and the promotion of relations in this area.
President Higgins praised the results achieved by Cuba in the campaign to protect the population against Covid-19 with its own vaccines and expressed his rejection of the prevalence of economic sanctions that severely affect the country’s possibilities of accessing essential health resources. He stressed that such sanctions are contrary to the spirit of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law and must cease immediately.
The meeting took place in an atmosphere of cordiality reflecting the friendly relations existing between the peoples of both islands.
