The Electoral Commission for referendum on the Family Code sworn in at the Embassy of Cuba in Jamaica

Kingston, Jamaica, 27 January 2022. This afternoon, the swearing-in ceremony of the Electoral Commission, responsible for the discussions and voting on the new Family Code, was held at the headquarters of the Embassy of Cuba in Jamaica.

The new Code has been drawn up in tune with current times and with a high level of inclusion and humanism. It was not by chance that the State Mission chose the eve of the anniversary of the birth of our National Hero José Martí to formally start the process of consultation and referendum of this legal instrument in Jamaica. Martí gave his life for his dream of a Cuba “with all and for the good of all”, where the first law would be “Cubans’ cult to the full dignity of man.”

Version 23 of the Family Code Bill – the one to be discussed by citizens- addresses family plurality and diversity; inclusion and equality and non-discrimination; affection as the central axis in family relationships; its educational and pedagogical nature; and the role of symbolic and non-neutral language. These massive discussions in and outside Cuba will result in a version that will be submitted to a referendum during coming months.
