Namibia, March 29th, 2021- Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi, Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia, received Sidenio Acosta, Ambassador of Cuba to this African country.

The Cuban diplomat handed over the Namibian parliamentary leader a congratulatory letter from his counterpart, Esteban Lazo HernĂ¡ndez, president of the National Assembly of People’s Power, on the occasion of the 31st Anniversary of the Independence of Namibia, celebrated on March 21st. Speaker Katjavivi thanked the letter and sent greetings to the Cuban leader.

Similarly, he recalled his visit to Cuba in 2016, to participate in the José Martí International Conference, held in Havana in January of that year. He also evoked the visits to different places of economic and historical interest, carried out in the context of that event. He highlighted the quality of the Conference and the excellent impression made by the biotechnological advances in Cuba.

On his side, Ambassador Acosta reported on the incidence of Covid-19 in Cuba and the status of the five Cuban vaccine candidates against that disease. Moreover, he explained the effects on the Cuban economy caused by the pandemic and the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States.

Speaker Katjavivi condemned this genocidal US policy and reiterated the solidarity of his country towards Cuba. He also expressed his satisfaction with the car caravan against the blockade, organized by the Namibia-Cuba Friendship Association, held last Saturday in the streets of Windhoek, capital of Namibia.

Both agreed on the excellent state of bilateral relations, both governmental and parliamentary. Likewise, they identified new aspects for its strengthening.

The Namibian Parliament is made up of the National Assembly and the National Council. In both houses, SWAPO, the ruling party and former national liberation movement, has a majority.
