Aegean. Greece. The seventh presentation of the book José Martí and “the Greek” took place January 31, in the city of Heraclius, capital of Crete, the largest Greek island and fifth in the Mediterranean, located about 10 hours by boat south of the country’s capital. Just in the days in which the 169th anniversary of the Apostle’s birth was commemorated, the deep admiration felt by the people of Greece towards the life and work of the Cuban National Hero has been revealed once again. It was an unforgettable meeting, warm, attentive, supportive, exciting, crowded, deep, that looked to the future of a better world from the work and action of a man who died “facing the sun”, for the independence of his country, and who was the best Cuban friend of “the Greek”. Thank you for their words and greetings to Mr. Nikos Katcharakis, Rector of the Greek University of the Mediterranean. Similarly, Mr. Konstantinos Fasoulakis, Vice Governor of Crete; Mrs. Rena Papadiki, Vice Mayor of Hiraclio; Mr. Nicolaos Igoumenidis, Member of the Greek Parliament for the Syrisa party; Mr. Manolis Sindichakis, Member of Parliament of the Greeks for the Communist Party of Greece, and Mr. Vaguelis Giorgakakis, Director of the Editorial TOPOS. The presentation ceremony of José Martí and “the Greek” in Crete was greeted by the Cuban ambassador to Greece, Zelmys Domínguez Cortina. Thanks to all the friends present. Special thanks to the Greek University of the Mediterranean for their commitment to make this presentation in Crete, and to my friend Manolis Vrithias for so much love, effort and vigilance. THANK YOU CRETA, ONCE AGAIN, FOR YOUR LOVE AND DEFENSE OF THE CUBA THAT IS STRUGGLING AND OF THE CULTURAL AND LIBERTARIAN BRIDGES BETWEEN CUBA AND GREECE!
The few previous hours, before undertaking the return tonight (February 1), were dedicated to paying homage at his grave, in the cemetery of the town of Galatás, near Canea, in the bay of Suda, to the great friend of the Cuban people, of Fidel and Che, the extraordinary composer and fighter Mikis Theodorakis, recently deceased, and who expressed the wish to be buried in the cemetery of this town, where the remains of part of his closest family rest. Mikis lived in Galatás, Canea, Suda, several years of his life. Given the profound meaning and love of Mikis Theodorakis towards Cuba and his people, it will be commented on separately.
