President of the Lebanese-Cuban Friendship Association denounces hostile US policy against Cuba

Beirut, February 1, 2021. The President of the Lebanon-Cuba Friendship Association, Maurice Nohra, gave an exclusive interview to Radio An-Nour, in which he addressed the relations between Cuba and the United States and denounced the historical hostility of the American governments against the island.

Nohra explained that the Washington administration has historically considered all of Latin America, including Cuba, as a backyard and affirmed that the Cuban thinker and leader José Martí was martyred in 1895 in the fight against the hegemony of Spanish colonial rule and against Washington’s ambitions to dominate Cuba.

In response to other questions, Nohra said that the United States is against Cuba because it fears that the triumph of its revolution will be an example for other peoples of the continent, and clarified that the most important factors for the strength of the Cuban Revolution reside in the Radical objectives of the revolution and its achievements, at the national and social level: to free Cuba from dependency and save its people from social injustice.

After the failure of the invasion of Playa Girón in 1961, which was prepared by the CIA, and in the face of the most ferocious economic blockade imposed by Washington on Cuba, the Cuban leadership organized the distribution of necessary materials, taking them to all families in all parts of Cuba, in addition to creating the best free health and education system for all Cubans. This was possible thanks to the nature of the Cuban socialist system. At the same time, Cuba continued its plans of solidarity and internationalist support with the peoples, including our Arab peoples in their struggle for national and social liberation.

As for some of the policies that former President Barak Obama has taken towards Cuba, he said that these were – as Obama himself declared – due to the failure of the US policy to isolate Cuba, however the US did not cancel the blockade economic against this country.

Today the new president, Joe Biden, could return to Obama’s political style as long as the fundamental contradiction between the two social systems remains. He recalled that former President Donald Trump, a few days before the end of his term, announced that Cuba was placed on the list of countries that support terrorism. This hostile resolution taken by Trump and which aimed to complicate some supposed new policies towards Cuba was condemned by large circles of world public opinion.

The President of the Association of Friendship with Cuba, Maurice Nohra, concluded that the absolute majority of the Cuban people are in favor of their Revolution, ready to protect its achievements, and reiterated the need for broad solidarity with Cuba and among the peoples.
