New petition to Canadian Parliament calls for an end to the U.S. blockade against Cuba

Ottawa, May 28, 2021 – Canadian New Democratic Party (NDP) MP, Niki Ashton, authorized the registration in the House of Commons of a petition by a Canadian citizen and co-chair of the Canadian Network on Cuba(CNC), Isaac Saney, in favour of lifting the U.S. blockade against Cuba.

The petition calls upon the Government of Canada to demand the U.S. government to lift the blockade against Cuba, that it cease its campaign of subversion and policy of hostility and aggression against Cuba, and to remove Cuba from the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism. Likewise, urges Canada to take immediate steps and actions through the implementation of the Foreign Extraterritorial Measures Act, among others, in order to preserve Canadian sovereignty and ensure that Canadian companies and other entities do not participate in the implementation of the economic sanctions of the United States against Cuba; and ensure that its relations with Cuba are based on equality and the respect for sovereignty, independence and the right of self-determination.

In its declarative part, the text states that the blockade against Cuba, in force for more than 60 years, constitutes the principal obstacle to Cuba’s social and economic development, as well as a violation of international law and the human rights of the people of Cuba and has been overwhelmingly rejected by the international community, including Canada, since 1992.

Canada has traditionally supported and voted in favour of the Cuban resolution at the United Nations General Assembly: “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”.

This petition will be open for signature by Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada until September 28, 2021.
