Lithuanian Social Democratic parliamentarian holds meeting with Cuban diplomat

On the morning of April 14th, the Lithuanian Social Democratic deputy H.E. Mr. Gintautas Paluckas held a pleasant virtual meeting with the Charge d’Affaires a.i of Cuba in this capital, Mr. Víctor Manuel Rodríguez Etcheverry.

During the meeting, the Cuban diplomat updated his counterpart on the situation of COVID-19 in Cuba, placing particular emphasis on the actions of health and government authorities to control the spread of the virus. Likewise, Rodríguez Etcheverry underlined the outstanding commitment of the Cuban biotechnology industry to develop its own vaccines against the disease, even under the strong economic pressure exerted by the United States government against Cuba for almost 60 years and intensified with more than 240 measures during the previous administration of Donald Trump.

Paluckas, for his part, recalled the visit to Vilnius, at the end of 2019, of a Cuban parliamentary delegation, which contributed to deepening the level of political exchange between Parliaments as one important basis for the advancement of relations between both countries. Likewise, he conveyed his impressions on the global management of the pandemic in Lithuania, the rate of vaccination at which it is advancing and the gradual return to normality, which could still take a considerable time. He took the opportunity to highlight Cuba’s achievements in health matters, which have made it possible to seek an alternative to exit the pandemic despite the United States Blockade.

The meeting took place in a positive and friendly atmosphere. Both parties highlighted the importance of maintaining these links periodically, until the pandemic situation in the world normalizes and the meetings can once again be face-to-face.
