Lithuania and Cuba advocate for the strengthening of their bilateral ties

Helsinki, May 10th.- The Director of the United Nations Department, International Organizations and Human Rights of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, H.E. Mr. Darius Staniulis, held, this morning, a pleasant exchange with the Charge D’Affaires a.i of Cuba in Finland and the Baltic countries, Víctor Manuel Rodríguez Etcheverry.

During the meeting, both diplomats highlighted the positive progress of bilateral ties between Havana and Vilnius, which have not escaped the impact of the global corona virus pandemic, but fortunately, they have not seen their development stop.

Rodríguez Etcheverry took the opportunity to update his counterpart on the reinforcement of the United States Blockade policy against the Caribbean Island, during Trump´s administration, generating inhumane consequences for the Cuban people, especially in the context (2020-2021) of global pandemic of COVID-19. He also made reference to the forthcoming presentation at the UNGA, for the twelfth-ninth time in a row, of the Cuban draft resolution that will require its lifting.

Staniulis, for his part, underlined the rejection generated by unilateral economic sanctions wherever they come from, when they are applied as foreign policy tools. In addition, he stressed that in the case of Cuba, the overwhelming majority of the international community has maintained its unrestricted support for the issue, since the moment Cuba started to submit it to a vote within the United Nations.

On Wednesday, June 23rd, member countries of the UNGA will vote for the draft resolution entitled: “Necessity of ending the economic, financial and commercial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”, in a context marked by the effects of the Sars-CoV- 2 pandemic, with the aim of demanding that Washington renounce to this inhumane and failed Cold War strategy, which is close to turning 60 years of life and almost 30 years of total international rejection.
