Foreign Minister of Jamaica welcomes new Cuban Ambassador-designate

Kingston, Jamaica, 11 January 2022. At a formal ceremony, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, welcomed the new Ambassador-designate of Cuba, His Excellency Mr. Fermín Quiñones Sánchez, at the headquarters of the local Chancellery.

During the meeting, parties exchanged opinions on the state of bilateral relations and the existing potential to continue expanding cooperation in other areas, in addition to the one practiced in the fields of health and education.

The Cuban Ambassador thanked Jamaica for its traditional position before the UN General Assembly against the United States blockade, as well as the solidarity and assistance provided by the people and government of Jamaica to Cuba in its fight against COVID-19. For her part, the Minister expressed her gratitude for Cuba’s support to Jamaica in confronting the COVID-19 pandemic, and acknowledged the efforts and achievements of our country to mitigate the effects of the pandemic, through drugs and vaccine development and production.

Particular attention was paid to the celebration this year of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and CARICOM, and the importance of promoting actions aimed at enhancing them.
