SYRIZA-PS expresses its full solidarity and support to the Cuban people, at a time when they are being put to the test by the interaction of COVID and the embargo, which was intensified with the imposition of 243 additional measures during the pandemic period. The blockade to Cuba, contrary to international law, was recently condemned by the vast majority of UN members (184 member states) in the General Assembly, June 23. The ties between our two peoples are timeless and are based on common historical experiences.
Friends of Cuba and its revolution are aware of the serious economic problems facing this small but proud Caribbean country, so they have never stopped campaigning in solidarity Cuba has been paying a heavy price for more than half a century since the U.S. commercial embargo, which continued despite the end of the Cold War and the relatively recent reestablishment of U.S.-Cuban relations. Cuban citizens reflect real problems and must be addressed with respect for freedom of expression and without resorting to violence. At the same time, any foreign intervention should be avoided to exploit the situation and let the Cuban people follow their own path of development, which has inspired many Latin American peoples and has provided excellent examples of international solidarity, even at current moment of deadly pandemic. SYRIZA-PS demands the end of the blockade, respect for the sovereignty and independence of Cuba and full respect for the rights and freedoms of the Cuban people.
