December 7, 2021. 61st Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Cuba

On December 7, 1960, the Republic of Cuba and Mongolia established diplomatic relations.

Cuba is honored to be the first country in the Americas to establish diplomatic relations with Mongolia and to open its diplomatic mission in its capital, Ulan Bator, in 1962.

Cuba is also honored to have today one of the twenty-six Embassies of countries residing in the Mongolian capital and to host in Havana the only Embassy of this Asian country in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In these sixty-one years, the uninterrupted diplomatic relations have been based on friendship, cooperation and mutual respect, which have been consolidated in the political, cultural, educational, sports, medical and economic spheres.

The six decades of bilateral ties have been characterized by visits at the highest level, mutual respect, collaboration in multilateral forums and organizations, as well as by the coincidence in the defense of multilateralism and the principles of International Law.

Between April 26 and 29, 1970, a Cuban delegation headed by the then Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, visited Mongolia, where he announced the founding of the Cuba-Mongolia Friendship Association, which was presided by the Cuban national poet Nicolás Guillén.

In 1972 the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro Ruz, welcomed in Havana the then party leader and Mongolian president, Umjaagiin Tsedenbal and in 1984 the then president of the Council of Ministers J. Batmunkh. In 2016 Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, received the then president of Mongolia, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj.

Cuba highly appreciates the sustained and traditional international position of Ulaanbaatar in the United Nations General Assembly and other international forums in support of the island against the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States.

There is also a mechanism for Political Consultations between the foreign ministries of Cuba and Mongolia that held its last meeting in Havana, in January 2019.

The basis of the bilateral collaboration has been biotechnological products, as well as health, sports, agriculture and education. Since 1963, more than 120 Mongolian students have graduated in Cuba in multiple specialties, including physical culture, sports medicine, and medical sciences.

Bilateral ties are not only at the State´s or Government´s levels, but also extend to relations between parties, parliaments and peoples.

Recently, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) sent a fraternal message of greeting to the ruling Mongol People’s Party (MPP) on the occasion of the Centennial of its foundation and its 30th Congress that meets on December 6 and 7, 2021 in the capital of that country. In the message, the PCC wished success to the Congress, while renewing its will to strengthen relations between both parties.

On the other hand, in Mongolia there is a Parliamentary Group of Friendship with Cuba, a Friendship Association and an Association of Mongolian Graduates in Cuba. For its part, the National Assembly of People’s Power of Cuba has a Parliamentary Friendship Group with some Asian countries, including Mongolia.

Both countries have several cooperation agreements or memoranda of understanding between news agencies, Chambers of Commerce, Ministries of Health, Environment and Higher Education, Institutes of Sports and Physical Education, among others.

Cuba and Mongolia also share the will and interest to continue strengthening the historic relations and cooperation between the two countries.
