Cuba: When US issues unilateral lists and certifications, it hinders cooperation in the fight against terrorism

New York, 4 November 2021.“We reject the use of the fight against terrorism to cover up acts of aggression, undermine national sovereignty, interfere in the internal affairs of other States and violate the human rights of their peoples”, stated today the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Pedro L. Pedroso Cuesta, during his statement  at the Special Meeting of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the Security Council commemorating the 20th anniversary of resolution 1373 (2001) and the establishment of the Committee.

The Cuban high representative pointed out that the promulgation of politically motivated unilateral lists and certifications by the US government hinders cooperation and contravenes international law.

The UN must pronounce itself against this type of designations, which only serve to stigmatize and exert pressure against countries that, sovereignly, do not comply with the will of the United States, he claimed; while explaining that it corresponds to the Organization, due to its universal character, to lead the efforts of the international community in the fight against terrorism, on the basis of respect for the purposes and principles of its Charter and international law.

Pedroso Cuesta asserted that the fight against terrorism, in all its forms and manifestations, requires a comprehensive approach, due to which the actions of prevention and confrontation must be accompanied by concrete actions to eliminate its root causes. “We reiterate Cuba’s firm willingness to contribute to the collective efforts led by the UN to eliminate international terrorism,” he concluded.
