Cuba supports work to strengthen and promote international treaties at the UN

New York, 15 October 2021. Cuba considered it relevant to continue working on updating the current rules of procedure regarding the registration of treaties, in order to incorporate into it technological advancements and the newest practices.

So it was stated by Ambassador Yuri Gala, Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, when delivering a statement under item “Strengthening and Promoting International Treaties”, which is being discussed by the Sixth Committee of the UN General Assembly.

In his remarks, Gala affirmed that the use of electronic resources can contribute to overcoming the current shortcomings in the treaty publication system and that treaty publication practices could be modernized, while balancing requests to shorten delays in the publication of the treaty compilation with the need to respect multilingualism as a fundamental value of the Organization.

In addition, the diplomat expressed Cuba’s support for the work undertaken by the Treaty Section and the support it provides to Member States, particularly through capacity building, publications and technical assistance. In this regard, he underscored the significance of the seminars taught by the Treaty Section and urged to continue delivering them.

International treaties are an important tool in international relations and the maintenance of international peace and security, as well as in strengthening the rule of law at the international level. The United Nations bodies, and particularly the Sixth Committee, play a pivotal role in strengthening and promoting the international treaty framework.
