“Cuba is not alone”, solidarity event of the Greek initiative for the nobel for Cuban doctors

Athens, July 29. The Greek initiative for the awarding of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize to the Cuban Medical Brigade “Henry Reeve”, organized an important solidarity event with Cuba at the headquarters of the Greek Chamber of Fine Arts. Velisarios Kossivakis, coordinator of the Greek committee, coordinated the event where a book entitled “Cuba is not alone” was promoted, with 12 works of art by the prestigious painter Takis Varelas, Vice President of the Honorary Council of the Greek Initiative that has 600 important personalities from Greece. The book with the paintings that Takis Varelas donates to support Cuba is a great example of the solidarity and friendship of the Greek people with the Cuban people.
The works were exhibited in their originals during the event, where the president of the Chamber of Fine Arts Eva Melá, the Cuban ambassador to Greece Zelmys María Dominguez Cortina, the painter Takis Varelas, and Dr. Nikos Chondropoulos from Sotiria hospital took the floor.
Velissarios Kossivakis, coordinator of the initiative, introduced the speakers and highlighted that this was an act of solidarity with the Cuban people, against the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba. He stressed that the motto of the Greek initiative is “Nobel Yes, blockade No”. He emphasized the unconditional solidarity of the Greek initiative with the Cuban people and the importance of expressing support for Cuba in these complex moments in which it is being attacked by campaigns of lies against the revolution. This sentiment was highlighted by the speakers and several of those present at the event and the solidarity and support of the Greek people for the Cuban revolution was reaffirmed. A leader of one of the education unions read his union’s statement of support for Cuba in the face of negative campaigns and against the blockade.
The ambassador, in addition to thanking the demonstrations of solidarity, explained the effects of the blockade exacerbated by the measures of the Trump administration that are still in force, the cruelty of the strengthening of the blockade in times of the Pandemic; as well as the current situation in Cuba, which they try to present as a collapsed state, with campaigns of lies and manipulation of information coordinated and financed by the US, as part of their unconventional war plan, designed through cyberwar and terrorism against Cuba.
Among those present were friends of solidarity associations, different political forces, artists, union leaders, members of the Greek initiative and friends of Cuba in general. The presence of George Katrougkalos, former Chancellor of the Syriza party, among those attending the event stands out.
The Hellenic Initiative to request the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize from the Cuban Medical Brigade “Henry Reeve” was founded on March 28, 2020 and to date has collected more than 240,000 signatures in support of the request.
