Cuba appreciates UNDP’s support for national development efforts and in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic

New York, 30 August 2021. During his statement at the second session of the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board, Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, transmitted to Mr. Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator, Cuba’s appreciation for the entity’s support for the national development efforts and in addressing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He highlighted that the new UNDP Strategic Plan 2022-2025 will carry on its work during the previous period, through six signature solutions that are consistent to the entity’s capacities and role in the United Nations system.

He supported the fact that UNDP bases its new Plan on the policy and programming priorities of governments, within the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, and that poverty eradication is at the core of its work.

He underscored the focus of the new Plan on groups of countries in special situations, including Small Island Developing States, as well as “middle-income” countries. He welcomed the emphasis placed by UNDP on South-South cooperation.

The Cuban diplomat stressed the need for the new Strategic Plan to have adequate, predictable and flexible resources to enable UNDP to carry out its mandate.

He concluded by reiterating Cuba’s commitment to the work and mandate of UNDP.
