Cuba and Ethiopia commemorate the 44th Anniversary of the Victory of Karramara, in the Ogaden War.

Addis Ababa, 5 March 2022.  An emotional event was held in the Ethiopian-Cuba Friendship Park, to commemorate the 44th anniversary of the Victory of Karramara, which gave Ethiopia the triumph in the Ogaden War of 1978.  Present were members of the Cuban diplomatic mission, veterans of that battle, representatives of the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs, Ethiopian graduates in Cuba, members of the Cuban Medical Brigade in the country and Cuban residents. It also had a large popular attendance.

In his words, the Ambassador of Cuba in Ethiopia, Jorge Lefebre Nicolás, paid tribute to the Cubans and Ethiopians fallen in the Ogaden and recalled passages of this important internationalist feat in which 163 Cuban fighters offered their lives.

On the Ethiopian side, statements were made by the Director of South America and the Caribbean of the Foreign Ministry, Bekuma Merdassa;  Shibeshi Kassa, from the presidency of the Association of Friendship between the Peoples of Ethiopia and Cuba; Sertse Firesibhat, deputy head of the Art, Culture and Tourism Bureau of addis Ababa city, war veterans and mutilated, and active military personnel.  Gratitude to Cuba prevailed for the selfless help in those difficult times.

As a culmination of the commemoration, floral offerings were placed at the two murals that show the portraits printed on bronze plaques of the 163 Cuban combatants fallen during Operation Baraguá, the name with which the Cuban presence in the Ogaden War was codified.
