Mutual ministerial statement on International Day Against the Use of Kid Soldiers

“Canada is determined to prevent the recruitment and usage of children in armed discord. In 2017, Canada launched the Vancouver Principles, a collection of commitments designed to help countries end this practice. Specifically, the Principles focus on the role that peacekeepers can play. To date, 106 countries have endorsed the Concepts. To support their implementation, Canada’s Peace and Stabilization Operations Program is providing multi-year support to the United Nations Department of Peace Operations to better prepare police, military and civilian peacekeepers to protect children. February 12, 2022 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada “No kid should ever be made to take part in war, yet children continue being cruelly exploited in equipped conflicts worldwide. Children—including young boys and girls—serve as soldiers, cooks, porters, messengers, agents, and sexual slaves. Several are killed, and those that survive can suffer from deeply physical, psychological and psychological scars. In all cases, these are denied their basic individual rights. “Much a lot more needs to be done to ensure that children are kept out of armed issues, but progress is possible.
