Backgrounder – Government of Canada announces allocation of $123 million for projects to support Haiti  

Project details: This project will support the HNP to address gang-related SGBV. The project will work primarily with the HNP, while also engaging a variety of Haiti-based stakeholders, including survivors, community-based organizations, service providers and other UN agencies and programs. The main activities include addressing the data deficit related to sexual violence, implementing referral pathways for service provision, promoting access to justice for survivors and raising sensitization and awareness in gang violence contexts.  Funding: million  
 (from previously announced funding) Recipient: Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Recipient: United Nations Project title: Strengthening Haiti’s Border Management Capacities to Improve Security (from previously announced funding) Recipient: United Nations Development Programme Project title: Procurement of Personal Protective Equipment and Vehicles for the Haitian National Police Project title: Procurement of Personal Protective Equipment and Vehicles for the Haitian National Police   Project details: This funding, which is channelled through a United Nations trust fund, will support the deployment of the Kenyan-led MSS mission, which will support the efforts of the Haitian National Police (HNP) to improve security conditions in Haiti for the civilian population. The trust fund will help to enable and operationalize the mandate of the MSS mission by financing a range of activities, including, but not limited to, communications and logistical support for police contingents deployed to the MSS mission, training-related support to the MSS mission and the provision of expertise in areas such as human rights due diligence.

Recipient: United Nations Office for Project Support (UNOPS) Project details: Funded through the International Assistance Crisis Pool (for fiscal year 2023 to 2024), this project will provide personal protective equipment and vehicles for the HNP to help restore rule of law and stability in Haiti. This project will enhance the capacity of the HNP to operate and to respond to criminal gang activity in high-risk areas while ensuring HNP personnel are provided with the appropriate protective gear and equipment to reduce causalities and increase operability in policing activities.  (from previously announced funding) Recipient: United Nations Office for Project Support (UNOPS) Funding: .5 million The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced the allocation of 3 million for projects to support Haiti while in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. It is being distributed as follows: Project title: Procurement of Logistics and Communications Equipment for the Haitian National Police Funding: .9 million Project details: This program contributes to the fight against impunity in Haiti by strengthening the capacities of institutions and actors in the security and justice sectors to investigate, prosecute and adjudicate serious crimes and corruption cases.
