Presentation of letters of credence of the Ambassador of Burundi to Portugal

On Monday January 8, 2024, the Ambassador of Burundi to Portugal His Excellency Mr. Isaïe KUBWAYO presented his letters of credence to the President of Portugal His Excellency Marcelo Rebelo de Souza. The ceremony was followed by an introductory conversation on topics relating to the diplomacy and relations between those two countries Portugal and Burundi.
During their conversation, His Excellency Ambassador Isaïe KUBWAYO informed the President of Portugal that the Government of Burundi wishes to strengthen the bilateral relations with Portugal. In turn, Mr. Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, President of Portugal congratulated the Ambassador of Burundi for his country and highly appreciated the Burundi’s commitment to strengthening the relations with Portugal. He also wished His Excellency Isaïe KUBWAYO a good stay and a good job. He insisted that Portugal is ready to work within the framework of strengthening the relations.

Note that Burundi and Portugal have maintained the diplomatic relations at the Ambassador level since February 22, 1975. The Ambassador of Portugal to Burundi resides in Kinshasa and the Ambassador of Burundi accredited to Portugal resides in Paris. Portugal indirectly supports Burundi through the European Union Commission and the Agencies of the United Nations System. But there is no agreement on mutual cooperation.
A visit by the High Authorities of the Country to Portugal and the signing of a General Cooperation Agreement could open the new relations between Burundi and Portugal
