Minister Teodora Genchovska: Bulgaria supports tough sanctions in response to Russian military aggression against Ukraine

Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodora Genchovska is taking part in an extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels. The only item on the agenda was the Russian military invasion to Ukraine.

“Bulgaria strongly supports tough sanctions in response to Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, including sanctions against the Security Council of the Russian Federation and President Putin. Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders is a fact that is not negotiable”, said Bulgaria’s first diplomat. She called for close co-ordination regarding the evacuation from Ukraine and briefed her colleagues on the measures taken by Bulgaria in this regard.

The Council approved the legal acts for the new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, incl. banking sector, high-ranking individuals and legal entities from the Russian Federation, as well as oligarchs. It is planned to adopt additional restrictive measures against Belarus in connection with the country’s assistance in Russian military aggression.

The ministers discussed providing additional assistance to Ukraine and stressed their strong support for Georgia and the Republic of Moldova.
