On November 23, 2021 in Accra, the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bulgaria to Ghana based in Abuja, Yanko Yordanov presented his credentials to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The ceremony took place at the Jubilee Palace, which was built in 2017 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Ghana’s declaration of independence.

During his conversation with President Akufo-Addo, Ambassador Yordanov stressed that a series of initiatives to deepen bilateral co-operation was launched in 2021, including in the context of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Bulgarian diplomat pointed out that agreements have already been concluded between the National Library “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” and the Library Authority of Ghana, as well as between BTA and the Ghana Information Agency. The Bulgarian Diplomatic Institute will be one of the first international partners of the newly established Institute of the Foreign Policy Service of Ghana under a memorandum of cooperation already agreed between the two countries. Ambassador Yordanov raised the issue of taking measures in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations in connection with the long-standing difficulties in ensuring the security of Bulgarian properties with diplomatic status in Accra.

Sharing his assessment of the progress made in bilateral co-operation and recalling his visit to Sofia in 2007 as Foreign Minister, President Akufo-Addo gave his personal assurances that he would do everything in his power to restore the opportunity for the exercise by Bulgaria of the legal rights as owner of the property.

In Accra, Ambassador Yordanov also held a meeting with the Bulgarian community, and the event was attended by representatives of the resuming Association of Ghanaian Citizens Studying in Bulgaria. Ambassador Yordanov also spoke with the head of the EU Delegation to Accra, Irchad Razali, with the doyen of the diplomatic corps, Claudia Turbay Quintero, the ambassador of Colombia in Accra, and the local UN coordinator, Charles Abani.
