The Human Rights Council of the United Nations Office in Geneva today held its 30th special session to discuss the violations in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, based on a request submitted by the Permanent Mission of the State of Palestine and the Mission of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on behalf of the organization of Islamic Cooperation in Geneva with the support of most Arab and Islamic countries.

They submitted a draft resolution condemning these violations and containing a set of elements, including the establishment of an independent international commission of inquiry to look into all violations of international humanitarian law in the occupied Palestinian territories, including both East Jerusalem and Israel.

During this session, the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom, Dr. Yusuf Abdul Karim Bucheeri, made a statement in which he affirmed the Kingdom’s support for holding this important special session of the Human Rights Council.

He called on the UN to assume its legal, moral, and humanitarian responsibility to ensure that all countries abide by the UN resolutions related to the issue and to providing protection to the Palestinian people and intensify efforts to reaching a comprehensive and lasting peace in the Middle East for the benefit of all sides.

The Ambassador also affirmed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s firm position in support of the rights of the brotherly Palestinian people and its total rejection of the continuation of the cycle of violence and dangerous escalation in the region.

He also conveyed the Kingdom’s strong condemnation of the military operations that the Palestinian territories, and the Gaza Strip in particular, have witnessed and led to hundreds of dead and wounded people in addition to the destruction of the infrastructure.

The Permanent Representative also denounced the violations of the rights of the Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem, especially Bab ِAl-Amoud and inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex and its environs, as well as in the neighborhoods of Silwan and Shaikh Jarrah, with the aim of expropriating the lands therein, in contradiction with international laws.

He said that the Kingdom of Bahrain welcomes Arab and international efforts, especially the efforts of the Arab Republic of Egypt to reach a ceasefire and engage both parties in negotiations to reach a long-term truce, halt the bloodshed and end the military operations in the Gaza Strip to reinstate security and stability and allow access of humanitarian aid and relief supplies to the residents of the Gaza Strip.

The Ambassador concluded his statement by calling for concerted international efforts to achieve security, stability, and peace in this sensitive region, which has suffered for decades insecurity, stability, and loss of hope.

He stressed the need to revive the peace process in the Middle East in order to reach a permanent political solution capable of achieving security and peace that restores the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights to an independent state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions, the two-state solution, and the Arab Peace Initiative.

It is worth noting that at the end of this special session, the Council adopted by vote a resolution on the grave situation of human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and inside Israel, including the establishment of an independent international investigation committee.

The committee is also to provide the Human Rights Council in its next regular session with oral update on the progress of this resolution and keep this humanitarian issue under consideration and under international follow-up.
