Minister Genchovska: Bulgaria can help Moldova in refugee crisis

Bulgaria can help Moldova in refugee crisis”, Foreign Minister Teodora Gencovska said during a joint briefing with Moldovan counterpart Nicolae Popescu in Chisinau. She added that the country is experiencing the greatest load from the war in Ukraine.

Minister Genchovska stressed that this crisis will continue and proposed that Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova make joint checkpoints on the Moldovan-Romanian border. The goal of the teams there is to make it easier to direct the flow of refugees to Romania and Bulgaria.

After the meeting it became clear that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova has raised the issue of the need for additional buses to ensure the movement of fugitives from the war in the direction of Bulgaria. The proposal will be discussed in the Council of Ministers, assured Minister Genchovska.

She reiterated Bulgaria’s support for Ukraine’s European perspective, as well as Moldova’s and Georgia’s desire to join European structures.

With regard to Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, Bulgaria reaffirms its unwavering support for the country’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, including within its territorial waters, Minister Genchovska said.

Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodora Genchovska is visiting Moldova together with the Deputy Minister Velislava Petrova. They will visit the city of Taraclia, 200 km south of Chisinau, where there is a Bulgarian community. On their return, Bulgarian citizens wishing to leave Moldova will be evacuated by government plane. About 80 Bulgarians will be evacuated from Chisinau. 33 Bulgarians have already been evacuated from Moldova.

Moldova has taken in more than 236,000 refugees since the start of the war, with 160,000 leaving the country.
