Permanent Mission of the DPRK to the UN Informs the UN Secretariat about Its Stand Demanding to End U.S. Economic Blockade against Cuba

Recently, the Permanent Mission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to the United Nations informed the following to the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs of the UN Secretariat, as regards the stand of the DPRK Government on the implementation of the Resolution entitled “Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Embargo Imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”, adopted at the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The UNGA has urged the United States to end all forms of illegal savagery economic blockade and unilateral coercive measures against Cuba including its June 23 adoption for 29th consecution of the Resolution A/RES/75/289 “Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Embargo Imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” with overwhelming support from the international community.

This is an expression of steadfast and continued solidarity of the international community to the people of Cuba who are struggling so hard for justice and peace of the world. It is a unanimous demand of all UN member states to end U.S. anachronistic and unjust embargo against Cuba which remains as the main obstacle to the economic and social development of the country and to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

However, despite these repeated calls by the international community, there has been a continued and systematic increase in the U.S. aggressive policy of interference in the internal affairs of Cuba and all sovereign states that maintain or try to establish the economic, commercial and financial relations with Cuba.

There have been over 240 anti-Cuba coercive measures imposed by the United States in recent years. Moreover, a considerable number of measures adopted in the year 2020 alone, in the midst of the pandemic in Cuba, illustrate the particular cruelty of this policy in extraterritorial scope to deprive the people of Cuba of the necessary supplies to prevent and treat the disease.

The DPRK Government strongly denounces such coercive measures imposed by the U.S. against Cuba as a serious challenge to the UN Charter and international law, infringement on sovereignty and crimes against humanity.

The unilateral sanctions of the U.S. against sovereign states draw condemnation and denunciations from the international community as days go by and bring about only isolation of the U.S. itself.

The longer the anachronistic U.S. economic embargo against Cuba continues, the more the Cuban people will struggle with their redoubled efforts.

The DPRK Government strongly urges the U.S. to lift unconditionally and with no further delay all forms of unilateral coercive measures and economic sanctions against Cuba in the fields of the economy, trade and finance, in accordance with relevant UNGA resolutions and the final document of the 18th Session of the NAM Summit.

The DPRK Government once again extends its full support to and solidarity with the government and people of Cuba in their just cause to safeguard sovereignty of the country.
