UNICEF Representative, Mr. Irfan Akhtar, calls on Minister Todd
Acting Representative of the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, Mr. Irfan Akhtar, today called on Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Honourable Hugh Todd.
The UNICEF Representative congratulated the Foreign Minister on the success of the recent virtual Ministerial Level Meeting hosted by Guyana in its capacity as Chair of the Group of 77 and China (G77 + China). Further, he reaffirmed the UN agency’s commitment to providing technical assistance to line Ministries and related agencies to realize the rights of every child.
Minister Todd expressed his gratitude to Mr. Akhtar for his continued support. He noted that UNICEF continues to play a pivotal role in Guyana. “The Government of Guyana is committed to our multilateral and treaty obligations and look forward to further collaboration with UNICEF to protect and advance the standing of our children and vulnerable groups,” the Foreign Minister stated.
Over the years, the Government of Guyana and UNICEF have worked closely together formulating work programs and executing projects within the framework of the Guyana/UNICEF Country Programme of Cooperation, which is crafted every five years. The Country Programme has been tailored towards supporting Guyana in meeting its development goals for children and adolescents through legislations and services and aligning the SDGs, children’s rights, and other international legal frameworks.
