UN rights chief condemns ‘cold-blooding killing’ of Eswatini individual rights lawyer

At the time of their death, Mr. Maseko was a legal representative for two associates of parliament facing demo for offences allegedly dedicated during civil unrest that occurred in 2021.   “Thulani Maseko was a stalwart of human rights who else, at great risk in order to himself, spoke up for numerous who couldn’t speak on with themselves, ” he stated.  

‘Stalwart of human rights’ 

Thulani Maseko, who was the pro-democracy activist, was chance dead in his home within the city of Mbabane on Sunday.   The group advocates for a tranquil transition to multi-party democracy in Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland.   “His cold-blooded killing has deprived Eswatini, Southern Africa and the world of a true champ and advocate for peace, democracy and human rights . ”  “I call on the authorities in the Kingdom of Eswatini to ensure a fast, independent, impartial and efficient investigation is held into his killing, in accordance with Eswatini’s constitution and international human rights law, and to hold all those responsible to account in fair trials, ” he said.

Mr. Maseko was the chairperson of the Multi-Stakeholder Forum, an umbrella organization of civil society companies, business and trade unions, political parties, as well as faith-based and women’s organizations.   The EL rights chief extended their condolences to Mr. Maseko’s family, friends, and colleagues.   Mr. Türk issued a statement condemning his murder.   In 2015, he has been acquitted on appeal plus released from a year within detention for allegedly criticizing the judicial system.
