UN experts laud International Olympic Committee for considering admission of Russian, Belarusian sports athletes

Meanwhile, IOC issued a statement on Tuesday, reiterating that “the sanctions against the Russian and Belarusian States and Governments are not negotiable. They have been unanimously confirmed by the recent Olympic Summit conference on 9 December 2022. ” The statement for the IOC ban – which usually, among other things, prohibits the Ruskies Federation and Belarus through hosting international sports competitions – came soon after the particular Olympic Council of Asian countries had invited Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in the region.  

Level playing industry needed

Discrimination-free sports

They will consider the recent IOC statement a reversal of the entire world sports committee’s recommended ban on athletes and authorities from those countries, which came days after the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.   Mentioning the IOC condition that only Russian and Belarussian athletes who have not actively supported the war within Ukraine would be permitted in order to compete in a neutral capability, the experts urged the IOC to get more steps to align its recommendations with international human being rights standards on non-discrimination. “When States so flagrantly ignore human rights, we have a greater obligation to endure in support of our common beliefs, ” professionals said.   In its statement, IOC said “no sportsman should be prevented from competing just because of their passport” and that “a pathway for athletes’ participation in competition under strict situations should for that reason be further explored. ” 

IOC: sanctions not negotiable 

Special Rapporteurs are appointed by the UN Human Rights Authorities , which is located in Geneva. They are mandated to examine and report back on a specific human rights theme or perhaps a country situation. “The IOC recommendation raised serious issues associated with direct discrimination, ” the UN specialists said . “We understand the desire to support Ukrainian sportsmen and the Ukrainian Olympic community, who suffer terribly from the war, together with all other Ukrainians, but the Olympic Committee and more widely the particular Olympic community have also the compelling obligation to abide by the Olympic Charter , and more broadly international human rights norms prohibiting discrimination. ” 

Role of EL Rapporteurs

Same rules for all  Along with IOC permission, the athletes would be able to get a chance to participate in the Paris Olympic Video games in 2024. Following the EL experts’ discussions with the IOC Executive Board, the world sports body issued a declaration on Saturday referring to the need to respect the particular rights of all athletes to become treated without any discrimination , in line with the Olympic Charter.
