UN Delegation Led by Deputy Secretary-General Calls upon Afghanistan’s De Facto Taliban Government bodies to Reverse Course on Recent Decrees Limiting Women’s, Girls’ Rights

Afghans Must Not Be Abandoned, High-Level United Nations Officials Say

The most recent decrees issued by the de facto authorities banning women from working for non-governmental organizations has forced many partners to pause operations which can not be safely and meaningfully shipped.   While the recent exemptions to the ban introduced with the de facto authorities are usually opening spaces for humanitarians to continue — and in some cases curriculum vitae — operations, these stay limited to few sectors plus activities. “Our collective ambition is for a prosperous Afghanistan that is at peace with itself and its neighbours, and on a way to sustainable development.   However right now, Afghanistan is separating itself in the midst of a terrible humanitarian crisis and one of the most susceptible nations on earth to climate change, ” she said.   “We must do everything we can to bridge this particular gap. ” On behalf of the Secretary-General, the Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Prophet; the Executive Director from the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women), Sima Bahous; and the Assistant Secretary-General of the Section of Political, Peacebuilding Matters and Peace Operations, Khaled Khiari, completed a four-day visit to Afghanistan to appraise the situation, engage de facto authorities and underscore United Nations solidarity with the Afghan people. The de facto authorities also have recently moved to close educational institutions to female students across the nation until further notice, and have barred girls from attending secondary school, restricted ladies and girls’ freedom of motion, excluded women from many areas of the workforce and banned women from using parks, gyms and public bath houses. In meetings with sobre facto authorities in both Kabul and Kandahar, the delegation directly conveyed the security alarm over the recent decree banning women from working for nationwide and international non-governmental organizations, a move that undermines the work of numerous organizations assisting millions of vulnerable Afghans. The United Nations and its partners, including national and international non-governmental organizations, are helping over 25  million Afghans exactly who depend on humanitarian aid to survive, and remain committed to keeping and delivering. During their objective, Ms.   Mohammed plus Ms.   Bahous fulfilled with affected communities, humanitarian workers, civil society along with other key actors, in Kabul, Kandahar and Herat.   “We have witnessed amazing resilience.   Afghan females left us no doubt of their courage and refusal to become erased from public living.   They will continue to supporter and fight for their rights, and we are duty bound to aid them in doing so, ” Ms.   Bahous stated. The visit to Afghanistan followed a number of high-level consultations on Afghanistan across the Gulf and Asian countries.   The delegation met with the leadership of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation  (OIC), the Islamic Development Bank, groups of Afghan women within Ankara and Islamabad, plus a group of Ambassadors and Exclusive Envoys to Afghanistan located in Doha.   The abordnung convened with Government leaders from the region and religious leaders to advocate for the crucial role and complete participation of women and rally support for the Afghan individuals. “The effective shipping of humanitarian assistance is definitely predicated on principles that need full, safe and unhindered access for all aid workers, including women, ” Ms.   Mohammed said. “My message was very clear:   while we all recognize the important exemptions made, these restrictions present Afghan women and girls with a future that confines them within their own homes, violating their own rights and depriving the particular communities of their services, ” Ms.   Mohammed stated.
