Sudan: Start of final stage towards civilian rule a good ‘important step’

The framework contract followed months of discussions in the wake of the twenty five October 2021 military coup, which derailed the transition to civilian rule.  

Building on progress 

“This step builds on the progress achieved upon the signing of the Political Framework Agreement on 5 December 2022, and marks another important step forward towards realizing the aspirations of the Sudanese people for democracy, peace plus sustainable development, ” said UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.   The UN main also urged key stakeholders who failed to sign the 5 December Agreement to join the political process .   Military and civilian commanders began meeting in the capital Khartoum, on Sunday, meant for four days of talks aimed at reaching a deal on regulating during a two-year period in front of elections.  

Broad participation critical 

“To ensure a enduring settlement, the Secretary-General underscores the importance of including the broadest variety of Sudanese stakeholders, including ladies, youth, and civil society, ” said Mr. Dujarric.   Prior to the coup, military and civilian leaders shared energy in a transitional government founded after Sudan’s longtime Chief executive Omar al-Bashir was ousted in April 2019.   The particular UN, the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Specialist on Development (IGAD) consist of the Trilateral Mechanism which has been mediating among the sides.   He further stressed the importance of strong and coordinated international support to the political process under the framework of the Trilateral Mechanism.   The Organization underlined its dedication to support the process and to help secure a final political contract over the coming weeks.
