South Sudan: ‘Raw violence’ displaces thousands during ‘ruthless conflict’, UNHCR says

And presently, conflict is spreading via Upper Nile’s Fashoda county, threatening the city of Kodok.   Local responders remarked that at least 75 per cent from the estimated 5, 000 individuals displaced to Melut County from Manyo County are women and children, many of who were separated from their caregivers.     Despite UNHCR’s support in de-escalating stress and promoting peace, the problem continues to deteriorate.   “Civilians are under attack in this callous conflict; we must ensure their particular protection”, the UN formal stressed.

‘Civilians under attack’

Some of those unable to flee, including older people, have been hiding in shrubbery during attacks, and along the Whitened Nile River.     On Sunday, UNHCR led another interagency mission to Diel within Jonglei.   At the same time, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator  ad interim , Philip Van der Auweraert, noted that the humanitarian community in South Sudan is “appalled by the continuous violence which has a devastating impact on the lives and livelihoods of common women, men and children”.

Several in hiding

Under the protection of the UN Mission in South Sudan ( UNMISS ), the site was initially set up nearly 10 years ago to host up to twelve, 000 internally displaced.   Women, children, and others on high risk, make up the majority of the particular displaced.     In Diel, northern Jonglei, some of the displaced are usually returning to their burnt-out villages and homes. Some happen to be forced to eat wild water plants to survive. The clashes that broke out within mid-November have also resulted in civilian deaths and injuries, the abduction of women and children, destruction of properties plus livelihoods, as well as reported incidences of gender-based violence.     “In both Adidiang and Diel, we witnessed the aftermath associated with raw violence”, said Mister. Jamal.     Throughout  Southern Sudan’s Greater Upper Nile Region,   “desperation is usually rising” as escalating equipped conflict has forced some to flee for their life four times over, plus displaced at least 20, 1000 people since August, the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, said on Wednesday.     Today, it accommodates some 37, 000 souls – overcrowded even before the recent arrivals.   Women at a WFP food distribution site in Agok, in the Abyei Administrative Area in South Sudan. Fleeing civilians are visibly traumatized and report killings, injuries, gender-based violence, abductions, extortion, looting and the burning up of property.

‘Pattern of attacks’

By the end associated with November, just 46 per cent of the 4. 8 mil needed this year had been obtained.   Survivors of the Adidiang attack reported that dozens were killed or wounded, while others drowned in the water when trying to escape.   South Sudan: ‘Raw violence’ displaces thousands throughout ‘ruthless conflict’, UNHCR says  “And more people are fleeing as conflict intensifies”, Arafat Jamal, UNHCR’s Representative in the world’s youngest country, said in a  press release .

Upgrading response

“Humanitarian companions are working tirelessly, around the clock, on multiple frontlines to provide the particular newly displaced people with vital supplies and services, ” said Mr. Van dieser Auweraert.

“Hostilities must cease immediately to reduce human suffering and prevent further loss of innocent lives”.

UNHCR, along with UN and NGO partners, has scaled up the response to provide life-saving support to the most vulnerable with shelter, relief items, defense services, cash, and other assistance.

It was the UN’s first visit to the camp since an attack on 7 September, when a few 4, 000 civilians sheltering there were forced to flee to Malakal.   “It was heartbreaking to see a very clear pattern of attacks upon civilians and their homes”.

Downward spiral

A minimum of 3, 000 people have already fled to neighbouring Sudan – further escalating South Sudan’s refugee crisis, which is currently the largest in Africa.   Southern Sudan has struggled to finish violence between armed groups and military forces since a so-called Revitalized Serenity Agreement brokered by regional bloc IGAD, between the Chief executive and his main rival, was inked in 2018. Execution has been slow.     Fighting engulfed in the Upper Nile village of Tonga on fifteen August. Violence has considering that spread further to northern parts of Jonglei and Unity states.   Equipped conflict, localized violence, spectacular flooding, worsening food insecurity and economic destabilization, have remaining 6. 8 million in need of urgent life-saving aid.

Working ‘around the clock’

Last 30 days, Mr. Jamal led a good inter-agency visit to the Adidiang island site, located regarding 40 kilometres south of the state capital, Malakal.   Since the start of the crisis, over 2, 300 people have arrived in the Malakal Protection of Civilians site – placing additional pressure on the already limited capacity.     Many have lost their houses and been separated from their families.   In Fashoda County, Higher Nile State, a recent surge in violence has out of place over 9, 100 people.
