Secretary-General Urges Restraint to Avoid More Escalation of Violence in Peru

The Secretary-General highlights that it must be critical to generate conditions just for meaningful and inclusive conversation to address the current crisis. The Secretary-General is constantly on the follow the situation in Peru with deep concern.   He or she is concerned about the number of deaths reported in the context of the protests and urges the authorities to conduct prompt, efficient and impartial investigations into these deaths, and to stay away from the stigmatization of victims. As demonstrations keep on, the Secretary-General urges constraint to avoid a further escalation of violence and reiterates his call on the authorities to comply with international human rights law.   He underscores that protests must take place in a peaceful manner, respecting lifestyle and property.   Even in occasions of public emergency, actions derogating from the right associated with peaceful assembly must be restricted to those strictly required by the exigencies of the situation plus consistent with other obligations under international law.
