Secretary-General Urges Restraint to Avoid Further Escalation of Violence in Peru

The Secretary-General highlights it is critical to generate conditions to get meaningful and inclusive dialogue to address the current crisis. The Secretary-General continues to follow the situation in Peru with deep concern.   They are concerned about the number of deaths documented in the context of the protests and urges the regulators to conduct prompt, efficient and impartial investigations in to these deaths, and to steer clear of the stigmatization of victims. The following statement has been issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: As demonstrations keep on, the Secretary-General urges constraint to avoid a further escalation of violence and reiterates his call on the authorities in order to comply with international human rights law.   He underscores that protests must take place in a peaceful manner, respecting living and property.   Even in situations of public emergency, measures derogating from the right of peaceful assembly must be limited to those strictly required by exigencies of the situation and consistent with other obligations below international law.
