I was seriously saddened to hear of the intensive loss of life caused by the earthquake which affected southern Türkiye and northern Syria earlier today. We all count on the international local community to help the thousands of family members hit by this catastrophe, many of whom were currently in dire need associated with humanitarian aid in areas where accessibility is a challenge. My heart goes out to the people of Türkiye and Syria in this hour of tragedy. I send my greatest condolences to the families of the victims and wish the speedy recovery to the injured. The United Nations is completely committed to supporting the response. Our teams are on the earth assessing the needs and providing assistance. The following declaration was issued today from the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: More than 1, 500 individuals have reportedly been killed and much more injured and the toll is constantly on the rise as rescue attempts continue.
