Secretary-General Concerned by Military’s Stated Intention to Hold Elections among Violence in Myanmar

The next statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: The United Nations is committed to staying in Myanmar and addressing the multiple vulnerabilities arising from the military’s actions since February  2021.   This requires full and unhindered access to all affected organizations as well as prioritizing the security and safety of the United Nations agencies as well as partners.   The Secretary-General renews his call for neighbouring countries and other Member States to urge the military leadership to respect the may and needs of the people of Myanmar and adhere to democratic norms. The Secretary-General welcomes the 21  December  2022 adoption of Protection Council resolution 2669 (2022) as an important step plus underlines the urgency designed for strengthened international unity.   Because called for by the Security Authorities, the Secretary-General’s Special Charge will coordinate closely with all the new Special Envoy from the Association of Southeast Hard anodized cookware Nations (ASEAN) Chair to engage intensively with all relevant events in Myanmar to achieve a finish to the violence and to assistance a return to democracy. 1 February marks two years since the Myanmar military overturned and arbitrarily detained members of the democratically elected civilian Govt, including President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.   The Secretary-General continues to stand in solidarity using the people of Myanmar and to support their democratic aspirations for an inclusive, peaceful and society and the protection of communities, including the Rohingya.   This individual strongly condemns all kinds of violence as the multidimensional turmoil continues to deteriorate and gas serious regional implications. The Secretary-General is concerned by the military’s stated purpose to hold elections amid modern aerial bombardment and burning up of civilian houses, along with ongoing arrests, intimidation and harassment of political frontrunners, civil society actors and journalists.   Without conditions that permit the people of Myanmar to freely exercise their own political rights, the suggested polls risk exacerbating instability.
