New Permanent Representative of Republic of Korea Presents Credentials

He also held several positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including Special Adviser to the Minister in 2013; Director-General, North Korean Nuclear Affairs Bureau and Ambassador for the North Korean Nuclear Issue in 2008; Senior Coordinator for International Organizations in 2007; and Director, United Nations Division and Director for Protocol Division I in 2000 and 2001, respectively.He also served in the Republic of Korea’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in various positions, including Counsellor, beginning in 2002 and First Secretary, beginning in 1995.  In 1997, he was Counsellor in his country’s embassy in Saudi Arabia. The new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, Hwang Joon-kook, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Hwang was Visiting Professor at both Yonsei University and Hallym University in the Republic of Korea.  He also served as Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 2016 to 2018.  Between 2014 and 2016, he was the Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  In 2013, he also served as Ambassador for Republic of Korea-United States Defense Burden-sharing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  From 2009 to 2013, he was Deputy Chief of Mission and Minister for Political Affairs and Security in Washington, D.C. Born in 1960, Mr. Hwang earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Seoul National University, Republic of Korea, and a master’s degree in public affairs from Princeton University in the United States.
