Ladies and Girls Improve Outcomes, Bring Fresh Perspectives to Technology, Technology, Secretary-General Says within Observance Message, Urging Motion to End Gender Bias

Following is UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ message for your International Day of Women plus Girls in Science, noticed on 11  February: There is certainly growing evidence that sex bias in science is leading to worse outcomes, from medication tests that treat the female body as an aberration, to look algorithms that perpetuate bias and discrimination.   However, in too many places around the world, women and girls’ access to education is limited or denied completely.   As women look to progress in scientific professions, inequalities and discrimination carry on and thwart their potential. Females make up under a third from the workforce across science, technologies, engineering and math, as well as less in cutting-edge areas.   Just 1 in 5  professionals working on synthetic intelligence is a woman. We can all do our component to unleash our world’s enormous untapped talent — starting with filling classrooms, laboratories and boardrooms with females scientists. We must — and we can — do more to promote women and girl scientists:   Via scholarships, internships and teaching programmes that provide a system to succeed.   Through quotas, retention incentives and mentorship programmes that help women overcome entrenched hurdles and build a career.   And crucially, by affirming women’s rights and breaking down stereotypes, biases and structural obstacles. On this International Day of Women and Girls within Science, we highlight an easy equation:   more women plus girls in science equates to better science.   Ladies and girls bring diversity to analyze, expand the pool of science professionals, and provide fresh perspectives to science and technology, benefiting everyone.
