Heritage of slavery still marks society, blocks progress says UN chief

The FLO data source will be a repository of worldwide and country level information on forced labour – the “one stop shop” pertaining to information on the scourge.

Eradicate captivity now

In a message ahead of commemorations for that International Day time for the Abolition of Captivity , on 2 December, Mr. Guterres said that societies remain scarred by the traditional suffering of enslaved Africans, and are unable to offer everyone the same development opportunities. As opposed to conventional assumption, some fifty two per cent of all forced work and a quarter of all compelled marriages, can be found in upper-middle income or high-income countries.

Slavery increasing

Citing the latest Worldwide Estimates of Modern Slavery upon forced labour and forced marriage, Mr. Guterres said that 50 million people were enslaved during the course of last year. It encompasses all situations of exploitation where a person cannot refuse, or leave, because of dangers, violence, coercion, deception, or even plain abuse of power. “Increased action needs to be used with full participation of all stakeholders, including the private field, trade unions, civil modern society and human rights institutions”, he said.

Still pervasive

Coinciding with the International Day time, ILO will be launching a brand new Forced Labour Observatory (FLO), developed by the ILO’s  Bridge Project    to respond to the request from the UN labour agency’s governors to develop “a global information warehouse on forced work and trafficking. ” “I also urge all countries to protect and uphold the rights of victims and survivors of slavery. Latest estimates simply by the  International Work Organisation  ( ILO ) display that forced labour plus forced marriage have increased significantly in the last five years. Modern slavery occurs in almost every country in the world, and cuts across ethnic, ethnic and religious lines.

New ‘global data warehouse’ on forced work

Although modern slavery is just not defined in law, it is used as an umbrella expression covering practices such as pushed labour, debt bondage, pressured marriage, and human trafficking.
