Speech: United Kingdom commences membership over the United Nation’s Committee on NGOs

The NGO must exist and be currently active. Such a dedication will foster deeper civil society engagement at the UN, while helping to reduce the backlog in applications. As People, we all have an interest in making this Committee as effective and efficient as possible. That is why the UK is supportive of any kind of effort designed to improve the working methods of the Committee. The particular NGO is independent of government, with a majority of opportunities filled by individuals without having government connection.

  • Appreciate it Mr Co-Chair,
  • Recently, this Committee has observed ever-increasing politicised deferrals — part of a wider craze of increasing reprisals towards civil society actors who seem to seek to engage with the EL. We encourage all Committee Members to use a fair and objective review process, and avoid blocking NGO applications with regard to political reasons.
  • Thank you.
  • The NGO does not harm people, property, or the atmosphere.

As demonstrated through our actions at the UN, the UK is certainly committed to championing civil culture engagement.   Regrettably, we do this in the face of opposition. A little group of Member States are at odds of civil society engagement with the UN, and seek in order to stifle their voices, fearing the scrutiny that civil society provides. We intend to seek approval of all apps from all legitimate NGOs. Therefore our scrutiny of NGOs will be only in the following categories in line with 1996/31. The NGO and its staff are in faith to the UN Charter, in this it does not engage in politically motivated attacks against member says, nor verifiably benefit from profits of criminal activity. In order to help deliver the Secretary-General’s Commitment to inclusive multilateralism, we urge all Committee Members to facilitate the safe and welcoming room for civil society involvement at the UN. The United Kingdom will be proud to commence our membership on the United Nation’s Committee on NGOs. The value of this Committee cannot be overstated. Its existence reflects that this UN recognises the essential contribution of civil society to our work. Civil society enhances the evidence base at the disposal, making our conferences more effective and more substantial. All of this helps ensure that what we do here has impact on the ground. Therefore we begin the membership with the understanding of the responsibility that comes with it.
