Press release: UK condemns Assad to get using chemical weapons in Douma in 2018

The UK, France and the US also performed a limited and targeted hit to degrade and prevent the use of chemical weapons with the Syrian regime. We are crystal clear that we will not allow the usage of chemical weapons to be normalised and remain firm in our resolve to respond appropriately. The Minister of State for the Middle East, South Asia, UN as well as the Prime Minister’s Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Assault in Conflict, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, has condemned the Assad regime for its use of chemical weapons following the publication of a report by OPCW which determined which the Syrian Arab Armed Forces used chlorine as a chemical weapon in an attack on Douma in April 2018.

Previous reports from the IIT acquired found the Assad regime responsible for carrying out three individual attacks with sarin and chlorine in Ltamenah in March 2017 and using chlorine in Saraqib in Feb 2018. Both are prohibited under international law.

This is the third report by the OPCW’s Investigation plus Identification Team (IIT) directly into chemical weapons attacks within Syria. Following a lengthy and meticulous investigation and despite Syria’s attempts to prevent investigation, the OPCW document has concluded that there are fair grounds to believe that the Syrian Arab Air Forces had been the perpetrators of the chemical substance weapons attack on 7 April 2018 in Douma, Syrian Arab Republic.

Minister for the Middle East, Master (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, responded to the report:

We share the OPCW’s assessment on Bashar al-Assad and his regime’s culpability and commend their strength, professionalism and expert impartial analysis in the face of desperate efforts by Syria and Russian federation to block this investigation. The OPCW’s meticulous investigations have now confirmed the UK’s evaluation that the Assad regime was responsible. The UK fully facilitates the OPCW’s investigations. The United Kingdom is determined to identify those responsible for chemical weapons attacks and hold them to account. Following the attack in 2018, the UK and allies identified that the significant body of information pointed out the Syrian regime’s obligation for the attack. The OPCW membership has hanging Syria’s voting rights and privileges in the OPCW till it complies with its chemical substance weapons obligations. Syria must fully declare and destroy all aspects of its chemical weapons programme. Today’s document from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons offers compelling evidence that this heinous chemical weapons attack within Syria was carried out by the Assad regime against its own people. We remember the sufferers of the Douma attack plus remain committed to pursuing the justice they deserve. We are steadfast in our commitment to holding all those who make use of chemical weapons to accounts.
