Namibia travel advice

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advise against all but essential travel to:

  • The whole of Namibia based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks

From 4am on Saturday 9 January, visitors arriving into the UK who have been in or transited through Namibia in the previous 10 days will not be permitted entry. British and Irish citizens, and third country nationals with residence rights in the UK arriving in the UK from Namibia, need to self-isolate along with their households on their return. Check the latest guidance for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The FCDO is not advising those already travelling in Namibia to leave at this time. Travellers should follow the advice of the local authorities on how best to protect themselves and others, including any measures that they bring in to control the virus. You should contact your tour operator or airline if you have any questions about your return journey.

Travel to Namibia is subject to entry restrictions

  • If you’re travelling to Namibia you will be required to present a negative COVID-19 test on arrival

See Entry requirements for more information before you plan to travel.

Preparing for your return journey to the UK

If you’re returning to the UK from overseas, you will need to:

Check our advice on foreign travel during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and sign up for email alerts for this travel advice.

If you’re travelling to Namibia during coronavirus, see the Coronavirus page for more information.

During the COVID-19 pandemic it is more important than ever to get travel insurance and check your cover. See the FCDO’s guidance on foreign travel insurance.

Avoid driving outside towns at night as wildlife and stray livestock pose a serious hazard. See Road travel

Violent street crime can affect foreign tourists, particularly in Windhoek. See Crime

If travelling along the Zambezi region, stick to the well-travelled routes. See Local travel

You should carry identification with you at all times. Unless you need to have your passport with you for immigration purposes or passing through security checkpoints, leave it in your hotel safe and carry a photocopy for ID.

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Namibia, attacks can’t be ruled out. See Terrorism

Most visits to Namibia are trouble-free.

If you’re abroad and you need emergency help from the UK government, contact the nearest British embassy, consulate or high commission.
