Guidance: International Humanitarian Law (IHL): UK developments and activities, 2018 to 2020

This UK report responds to the biennial UN General Assembly Resolution 73/204 on the Status of the Protocols Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and relating to the protection of victims of armed conflict. The report also considers measures taken to strengthen existing international humanitarian law, including those that aim to disseminate and fully implement it at the national level. The report covers a range of topics, including promoting IHL, training and doctrine in the British Armed Forces, the preventing sexual violence in conflict initiative (PSVI), and enforcement.

This report is included in the addendum to the UN Secretary General’s report on the resolution. The UK government has used a template questionnaire to encourage others to use a similar format in the future. The UK’s biennial report is in line with our work to promote voluntary reporting on implementation of IHL at the domestic level (see the UK voluntary report and the related toolkit). It is also in line with our encouragement of greater transparency and confidence-building measures among other countries.
