Participation of Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu in the 47th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, 26-28 November 2020

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu visited Niamey on 26-28 November 2020 to attend the 47th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from the OIC Member States on the margins of the meeting.

Minister Çavuşoğlu first had a sincere meeting with Foreign Minister Amine Abba Sidick of Chad on 26 November 2020. Minister Çavuşoğlu stated that they had discussed the election of the new Secretary General of the OIC during the meeting and that our support for education and development would continue for our Chadian brothers and sisters.

On the same day, Minister Çavuşoğlu met with Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid of Maldives.

Minister Çavuşoğlu expressed that we would further develop our cooperation with Maldives in every field particularly in economy, trade, agriculture and education, and that Turkish Airlines’ newly started flights to Male would make important contributions to tourism between our countries.

On 27 November 2020, Minister Çavuşoğlu addressed the 47th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OIC.

Minister Çavuşoğlu expressed that we should raise our voices for the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Uyghurs, Rohingyas, Turkish Cypriots and Turkish Muslim Minority in Greece, our sisters and brothers in Jammu and Kashmir, Muslims in Europe and the rest.

Minister Çavuşoğlu also drew attention to Islamophobia, and noted that migrants and Muslims continued to contribute to their communities, a recent example being the development of a COVID vaccine by two Turks living in Germany.

On the same day, Minister Çavuşoğlu was received by President Issoufou Mahamadou of Niger and conveyed him the greetings of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, congratulated Niger as the new Chair of the OIC, and underlined that we would develop our cooperation with Niger in every field, particularly in defense, health, education and mining.

Later, Minister Çavuşoğlu had a sincere meeting with Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah al-Saud of Saudi Arabia.

Minister Çavuşoğlu stated that we attached importance to our relations with Saudi Arabia, and that a strong partnership between Turkey and Saudi Arabia would be beneficial not only for our countries, but also for the entire region.

On the same day, Minister Çavuşoğlu attended the online “Youth Council of Foreign Ministers” organized by the OIC Youth Forum.

Minister Çavuşoğlu emphasized that with such gatherings, one could feel the dynamism of the Muslim youth, and that the Ummah trusted the youth’s energy to cope with challenges.

Minister Çavuşoğlu also held bilateral meetings with Senior Minister of Planning and Development Abdoulaye Bio Tchané of Benin, Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Nasser al-Mohammad al-Sabah of Kuwait, Foreign Minister Hanif Atmar of Afghanistan, Acting Foreign Minister Omer Gamareddin İsmail of Sudan, Foreign Minister Bisera Turkovic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Balal Mohamed Cusman of Somalia, Foreign Minister Aïssata Tall of Senegal and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Othman Jerandi of Tunisia, and evaluated the relations between our countries.
